What to do when my staff won't listen?

Question:
I've tried repeatedly to delegate to my staff, but they're not doing what I ask and it doesn't pay off. Help!
Answer:
The problem is typically with one who delegates, not the staff. Delegating takes time, effort and commitment. It's an investment in your staff and in your future when you delegate properly. Spend time with the person to whom you're delegating and clearly outline expected outcomes. Define what needs to be done and the deadlines. Allow for questions and quiz that person to make sure he or she understands the directive. Then let go and be available for questions. Meet periodically to see if the person is on target and course-correct where necessary. Follow up at the end for feedback. Be sure to praise a job well done. q
